What Are Handicrafts?

If you’re a well-traveled person, or passionate about home decor, art, culture, or just history, you’ve probably come across the term “Handicrafts”. So what are they exactly? And what makes them so famous and unique among the millions of art forms worldwide? Let’s find out.

Beauty

Many regions globally are known for their natural, breathtaking beauty, profoundly traditional culture, literature, and history, and an abundance of conventional artisans working on historically inherited crafts passed down from generation to generation for hundreds of years. These crafts are known worldwide for their intricacy, precision, inventiveness, and infusion of talent, culture, imagination, and history.

Variety

Various art forms like carpet weaving, wood carving, pashmina, shawls, papier mache, and copperware showcase exceptional craftsmanship and uniqueness. Each piece represents the artisans’ unmatched skill, intricate detail, and hard work, making them valuable and distinct, with no piece being the same.

Nature And Culture

We source from rugged, mountainous regions with generations of artisans skilled in weaving, carving, and crafting. Weaving and felting were especially significant in creating shawls, using wool, silk, and pashmina to keep warm, translating these areas’ beauty and vivid colour into their designs and embroidery. Our creations blend diverse cultures and traditions, influenced by nations including Iran (Persia) and Iraq, showcasing a rich history. The lively hues in shawls and carpets mirror the colours of nature (greenery, lakes, rivers, lotus flowers; cherry, apple, almond blossoms, autumn leaves, and birds of various colour palettes) in various countries throughout the seasons. Artisans adapt their work to match clients’ preferences, showcasing their versatile talent.

History

The influence of history and cultural interaction is apparent in copperware, adapted from the ancient art of sword handle decoration, established mainly by an Islamic teacher from Persia named Mir Sayyid Ali Hamdani. He brought Central Asian artisans to train locals. Carpet weaving is also an expression of the melting of cultures as they arrived in different countries than their own with international travellers, as well as Paper Mache, an art form developed in China. It was established during the craft trade around the world in the 14th century.

Originality

Certain crafts, like pashmina and wood carving, are deeply rooted in the region’s culture and nature. Pashmina protects against the harsh local winters, while wood carving utilises native walnut trees, making the art even more authentic to its country of origin. Handicrafts embody immense value, expressing authenticity, culture, and heritage, with their intricate beauty and vibrant inspiration being truly priceless.
